(115) Validity and reliability of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) for pain interference and quality of life in women with fibromyalgia

Abstract
The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) is a system of measurement tools developed to standardize reporting of patientcentered health related outcomes in various domains across a spectrum of chronic conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine validity and reliability of the PROMIS measurement tools for pain interference and quality of life in women with fibromyalgia. The current study is part of a larger randomized control trial evaluating the effect of TENS on movement pain in women with fibromyalgia. Data collected from 74 women prior to randomization to TENS treatment groups were analyzed (age=49.9611.2 years; BMI=35.068.2). Pain interference and quality of life were assessed using the PROMIS Pain Interference and Physical Function modules. These were compared with the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR), and the SF-36 Version 2. Internal consistency of PROMIS modules items were calculated using Cronbach’s alpha (a). Concurrent validity compared with existing validated measures in women with fibromyalgia was evaluated using Pearson product moment correlations, with partial correlation adjustments for age and BMI. Internal consistency of PROMIS module items were 0.90 and 0.87, respectively. The PROMIS Pain Interference module was strongly correlated with BPI Interference subscale (r=0.70, p<.01), but not with the BPI Severity subscale (r=0.29, p=.01). The PROMIS Physical Function module had a strong, positive correlation with the SF-36 physical function (r=0.76, p<.01) and physical health (r=0.65, p<.01) subscales, and a strong negative correlation with the FIQR (-0.66, p<.01). Our preliminary results suggest that the PROMIS Pain Interference and Physical Function modules reliably measure pain interference and quality of life, and correlate well with existing validated standardized measures used in assessment of women with fibromyalgia.
