Abstract
Background
An ongoing challenge in bipolar disorder (BD) research is accurately tracking participants’ moods. Mood tracking is usually done using standard clinical assessments, which are inconvenient for participants to undergo frequently. However, frequent assessments are necessary to capture dynamic mood changes typical of BD. The Aktibipo Self-rating questionnaire (ASERT) is a simple, ten-question, self-report mood survey. We examined the feasibility of collecting the ASERT weekly and ASERT subscale correlation to clinical mood assessments over the first six months of a longitudinal neuroimaging study.
Methods
Forty-two participants with BD completed the ASERT and were administered the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) at baseline. Participants were sent weekly text messages with links to an online ASERT survey and were compensated $5 per survey. If participants exhibited at least a five-point change on either the manic or depressive subscale, they were called and administered the YMRS or MADRS, respectively. Associations between ASERT subscales and standard mood scales were evaluated using Spearman’s correlation and robust regression.
Results
Median completion rate was 96%. Median completion time was 73 seconds. The ASERT depressive subscale exhibited significant correlation with the MADRS at baseline (p < 0.001) and during the study (p < 0.001). The ASERT mania subscale exhibited significant correlation with the YMRS at baseline (p < 0.001) and during the study (p < 0.001).
Conclusions
Our preliminary results suggest the ASERT can be feasibly administered weekly and provides useful mood estimation. Therefore, the ASERT may be an ideal tool to track mood in BD longitudinal studies.
