Abstract

Introduction Though ocular complications, such as vitreous hemorrhage, retinal detachment and posterior vitreous detachment, have been seen in healthy children in association with sports-related trauma, children with XLRS are presumed to be at higher risk since they have preexisting separation and decreased adhesion of the retinal layers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risks of contact sports injury related ocular complications in patients with XLRS and assess the impact of protective eyewear use. Methods Retrospective IRB-approved study of 56 male patients with a diagnosis of XLRS who were followed at a tertiary referral center, between January 1, 2000, and January 30, 2023. Results Of the 56 patients, 24 participated in sports and 9 wore protective eyewear. There was no statistically significant difference in final VA, CMT, or refractive error between patients who participated in sports and those who did not, nor between those who wore safety goggles and those who did not. One patient experienced a sports-related ocular complication (posterior vitreous detachment), who was not confirmed to be wearing sports goggles, and six experienced non-sports-related ocular trauma. Retinal detachment occurred in 8 patients. None of these were due to sports trauma; however, 3 were due to trauma outside of organized sports. Conclusion/Relevance Contact sports participation was not associated with worse visual outcomes or increased risk of retinal detachment in this small sample of patients. However, trauma was associated with retinal detachment, making education of families and patients important to prevent vision loss.
