Abstract
Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) is highly specialized skin cancer surgery that remains the gold standard for treating many cutaneous tumors. While MMS offers successful skin cancer control, managing patient satisfaction and anxiety is critical due to the unpredictable and often lengthy duration of the surgical day. This study aimed to identify drivers of anxiety and satisfaction for MMS patients and to determine the effectiveness of education videos in improving these outcomes. Patients were recruited from the UIHC IRL Mohs Surgery Clinic, with half receiving standard preoperative care and the other half receiving educational videos made by the American College of Mohs Surgery. Surveys were administered perioperatively and 3 months post-surgery measuring anxiety (VAS-A, STAI), general satisfaction (PSQ-18), and education/preparedness. Chart review collected patient demographics, biopsy data, MMS data, and other factors that may influence anxiety/satisfaction. Results from 66 subjects (55% male, 45% female, average age 69) identified prior MMS to be significantly associated with decreased anxiety (p=0.0055). Patients accompanied by family/friends were associated with significantly higher anxiety (p=0.0287). No association was found in anxiety/satisfaction for distance travelled or number of days from biopsy to surgery. Anxiety/satisfaction was unaffected by location of waiting between stages as well as initial biopsy site location. MyChart use was significantly associated with improved satisfaction, preparedness, understanding, and education satisfaction (p=0.0316, p=0.0356, p=0.0189, p=0.0037, respectively). Understanding drivers of these outcomes is crucial for improving patient care, as it allows healthcare providers to tailor their approach to individual needs, potentially reducing anxiety and enhancing satisfaction.
