Abstract

Aim of Investigation Utilizing multiple interventions, we have developed a structured, comprehensive and evidence-based approach to support and sustain a POSITIVE venipuncture experience across a children’s hospital. Methods This presentation will describe multiple, unique, interdisciplinary quality improvement initiatives and projects, led by a small number of nurses, which led to an improved approach to pediatric venipuncture. Discussion will also include various evaluation metrics used to assess success of the initiatives. Results Several initiatives were implemented to improve the pediatric venipuncture experience. Initiatives to be shared can be broken down into unique nursing initiatives (training models for a variety of clinicians, creation of professionally developed video resources, development of unit experts, availability of divisional experts via technology, practice prompts, tracking success/feedback/rewards, obtaining and ensuring availability of technology), patient support and parent collaboration (examples of documentation of support provided, development of an approach to identifying difficult access patients, parent access to analgesics, parent engagement through the interactive TV, websites, and appointment letters, parent outreach), interdisciplinary and organizational initiatives (in and out-patient phlebotomy process improvements, algorithm development and dissemination, engagement of hospital leadership through sharing IV success metrics and incidents, obtaining grants for further improvements). Success of these interventions has been measured by multiple factors including a decrease in negative parent satisfaction comments, automated tracking of venipuncture success, increased use of ultrasound by experts, audits of procedural support). Conclusions Through commitment towards implementation of a broad number of evidence-based interventions, pain and anxiety can be minimized and children can develop positive coping strategies which aid in building confidence for future healthcare experiences.
