Back to the Future: Revisiting Foundational Topics to Uncover Emerging Frontiers in PE Fit Research

Abstract
Although PE fit has been a cornerstone of the OB and HR literature for over a century (Kristof-Brown & Guay, 2011), recent scholarship has illuminated several areas of fit research that remain underdeveloped and ripe for exploration. Across the session's presentations, authors revisit foundational topics and ideas in fit theory—the dynamic nature of fit (Caplan, 1983; Lewin, 1943), the dark side of fit (Schneider, 1987), and the role of value congruence in employee work experiences (Schwartz, 1992)—to highlight underexplored research streams that present novel opportunities for future knowledge generation. Presenters take stock of the current state of various streams of fit research (e.g., temporal fit, person-organization (PO) fit, values congruence), extend foundational fit constructs to the contemporary work context (e.g., political ideology fit, dietary value congruence), and highlight exciting opportunities for future fit research. This symposium highlights several promising areas of inquiry, presenting attendees with an opportunity to consider how scholarship in these underexplored areas can produce a deeper, more nuanced understanding of how PE fit is experienced at work, and how these experiences influence individual and organizational processes and outcomes. Included presentations provide meaningful insights for scholars and practitioners alike.
