Abstract
This symposium seeks to advance theory on the career-based implications of nonwork identities and experiences, highlighting how employees’ roles and identities outside of the work domain systematically shape career opportunities, constraints, and trajectories. Across four papers using a variety of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, this set of paper presentations highlight that nonwork transitions alter psychological need fulfillment and core self-evaluations with downstream implications for well-being and career functioning; that stigmatized nonwork identities can trigger gendered consequences impacting invisible labor and career opportunity; that identity validation or threat shape how individuals manage interpersonal risk-taking through relational choice orientations with important career implications of doing so; and, that household structures can generate career stage-contingent advantages as partners’ resources accumulate through spillover and crossover processes over time. Collectively, the symposium frames careers as embedded in life-course dynamics and nonwork contexts, and it outlines an agenda for research and practice aimed at improving equity and sustainability in careers across diverse identities and experiences.
