Abstract
1. Describe the process of palliative care–specific assessment tool development for student pharmacists
2. Discuss ways an assessment tool can be integrated into assessment of students and the palliative care curriculum
Integration of palliative care principles in Doctor of Pharmacy curricula is expanding to fit the growing need of preparing pharmacists to care for seriously ill patients. No performance-based assessment tool exists for student pharmacists specific to palliative care to measure students’ progress.
To develop a valid (Phase 1) and reliable (Phase 2), palliative care–focused, performance-based assessment tool for student pharmacists.
Nine academic palliative care clinical pharmacists from different institutions nationally were recruited to participate in this iterative process. Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for hospice and palliative care clinical pharmacists were used as the framework for the development of this tool. Level of essentiality for student pharmacist ability to execute each EPA was determined by the workgroup. Supporting activities of the essential EPAs were drafted asynchronously by workgroup members for inclusion in the assessment tool. Surveys were distributed individually to group members to determine relevancy of each supporting activity for inclusion in assessment tool. Degree of agreement for relevancy of each supporting activity was evaluated with a content validity index (CVI) and scale universal agreement (S-CVI) after each survey. Phase 2 reliability testing is ongoing.
Out of 15 EPAs, 9 were deemed “essential” to include in a student pharmacist assessment tool. 34 supporting activities associated with the 9 EPAs were drafted by the group. After 3 rounds of survey distribution, consensus was reached by the expert group for 30 activities to be included in the student pharmacist OSCE-based assessment tool with S-CVI of 0.9593.
The palliative care student pharmacist performance-based assessment tool is valid.
This validated tool can be used by schools and colleges of pharmacy with integrated palliative care education to assess student achievement of palliative care–specific learning outcomes and highlight opportunities for curriculum improvement.
