Abstract

Abstract only This symposium brings together four papers that extend our understanding of leader well-being by considering how unique aspects of the leadership role influence leader well-being. While previous research has focused on the negative impact of demands on leader well-being, these papers consider how the power and status of the leader, the structure of the leadership role, and the impact of others may both positively and negatively impact leader well-being. We expect this symposium to generate discussion about the unique factors that shape leader well-being, leading us toward a fuller theoretical explanation of the effects of leadership on leader well-being. As this area of inquiry continues to grow, this is an opportune time to take a step back, consider the predominant perspectives represented in previous studies of leader well-being, and introduce perspectives that shed light on the ways that unique aspects of the leadership role have both positive and negative effects on leader well-being.
