Abstract

Qualitative researchers frequently engage with emotionally demanding topics and unsettling or challenging research contexts. Yet the impact of the intrapersonal emotion processing and necessary self-care after conducting such work remains largely absent from methodological training. While qualitative methods have emphasized reflexivity, particularly how researchers shape their research questions and interview processes, far less attention has been paid to how researchers are directly impacted by their research topics or contexts. This symposium focuses on the lived experiences of qualitative researchers conducting personally-relevant and/or emotionally-laden research. Panelists will discuss the often-invisible practices researchers use to navigate emotional demands and sustain themselves during the research process. This symposium invites attendees to consider how self-care, recovery, and restoration can, and should, be integrated into qualitative methods, especially when conducting personally-tied or emotionally-demanding research.
