Abstract

Workplace dynamics are increasingly complex and multifaceted, often creating tensions among conflicting emotions, identities, or orientations. Ambivalence, or holding both positive and negative orientations toward the same object, is a manifestation of such complexity. This symposium presents four papers that collectively approach ambivalence through affective, cognitive, and behavioral lenses, demonstrating how ambivalent experiences shape consequential workplace action. Two of the papers examine how nostalgia may induce ambivalent feelings and reactions for employees. Another paper examines the mixed effects and ambivalent evaluations of coworker attractiveness. The final paper examines the usage of dialectical thinking, a type of cognitive ambivalence, and its utility in reducing stereotype biases.
