Abstract
The peak tension and time course of isometric twitch contraction of vocalis muscle in vitro have been measured. Samples of vocalis muscle tissue were dissected and prepared from live dogs in Krebs-Ringer solution at a temperature of about 37 °C. The samples were stimulated with a single square pulse of amplitude 68 V and 2.5-ms duration with a Grass stimulator. Field stimulation was applied with parallel plate silver electrodes and active and passive responses of the sample were obtained electronically with a Cambridge Technology Dual Servo System (ergometer) at various levels of sample length. The twitch characteristics and the relation of physiological length of the muscle to its in-situ length are investigated. It was found that vocalis muscle has a contraction period of 25–30 ms with a latency period of 4–6 ms. [Work supported by NINCDS.]
