Abstract
Background
Electronic books (eBooks) are books that can be read on handheld devices or computers. These books are rapidly being incorporated into educational settings. The purpose of this innovation was to create patient education eBooks for older adults using Apple’s iBook Author program.
Methods
Graduate clinical nutrition students partnered with undergraduate communication students who were conducting classes at the local senior citizen’s center to help older adults better understand tablet computers (e.g., iPads). During the Spring 2014 semester, communications students (n=24) surveyed older adult participants (n=65) about health-related apps they would be interested in exploring. Based on this list, graduate clinical nutrition students (n=7) in the Fall 2014 semester created eBooks related to diabetes and muscle health. eBooks were shared with older adults who participated in tablet courses early in the Spring 2015 semester (n=25). Data were collected via interviewing nutrition students and supervising faculty. Qualitative methods were used for analysis.
Results
Students stated that the eBook creation process changed their attitudes towards technology and made learning hands-on. They believed that by authoring eBooks dietitians would be viewed as more relevant. Faculty viewed the innovation as multifold, providing older adults easy-to-comprehend content tailored to their needs and giving students the experience of adapting academic material to a particular audience while staying current on technology skills.
Conclusions
Creating eBooks provides a unique mechanism for disseminating ideas, sharing knowledge, and fostering understanding. It serves as a meaningful way to incorporate technology into courses, collaborate across disciplines, and engage with the general public.
