Abstract
This study examines the attitudes of Asian-born scholars and scientists who have settled in the United States and their role in the international scientific and educational community. It is based on interviews with 46 scientists and scholars born in China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Nine chapters focus on: (1) Asian scholars in the international scientific community; (2) Asian scholars' motivation for studying abroad; (3) migration of Asian academics to the United States; (4) the scientific networks of Asian scholars with their countries of origin; (5) the American academic job market for Asian scholars; (6) Asian scholars' involvement in research and teaching; (7) tenure and administration; (8) Asian scholars' perceptions of their role in U.S. higher education; and (9) the changing nature of the international scientific community.
