Abstract
This chapter focuses on the myth of Beate Uhse, the erotica business founded by Beate Uhse-Rotermund. It suggests that Uhse-Rotermund unknowingly created the Beate Uhse myth when she used her life story as a marketing device for the company in 1952 and that the myth created a public narrative linking sexuality, history, and consumption. The chapter contends that Uhse-Rotermund's sexual and domestic situation helped her established respectability among her customers and staff in the early years, and that feminized stories of her personal life found their way into the myth.
