Abstract

VZV is the causative agent of chickenpox and shingles. The murine monoclonal antibody 206, raised against viral coat glycoprotein gpIII, neutralizes VZV in the absence of human complement, blocks viral entry into cells and inhibits cell-to-cell spread of the virus in cultured cells. We have reconstructed Mab206 using CDR-grafting techniques. This reshaped antibody retained binding affinity for VZV gpIII and also cross-reacted with all clinical isolates of VZV tested.
