Book
The lexical phonology of Slovak
Phonology of the world's languages, Clarendon Press
1993
Abstract
This vol in the Phonology of the World's Languages series, consisting of a Preface, III Parts, & 10 Chpts, represents the first full generative phonological description of Slovak, & a comparative theoretical study of lexical, autosegmental, prosodic, & three-dimensional phonology. The problem of phonological representations is attended to by the introduction of the skeletal theory & the syllabic theory. Morris Halle's & Jean-Roger Vergnaud's proposal that phonological representations be viewed as three-dimensional (1980) is supported by an in-depth analysis of the independence & interaction of syllabic, skeletal, & melodic tiers. The significance of the establishment of a separate skeletal tier makes it possible to treat length & segmentation independent of melodic representation, & allows for a unified treatment of long vowels & diphthongs. The book is intended to be of interest to Slavists & theoretical linguists. 10 Tables, Bibliog. C. Brennan
