Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of continuous personal and professional development. The urologist’s career cycle and its place within the human life cycle is described, identifying changes and challenges within each phase of these cycles. The reader will learn of methods to affect sustainable change and self-care, as well as coping methods for unanticipated events, challenges, and complications. The chapter describes contributors to and risk factors for physician burnout and strategies to reduce burnout and increase joy in the physician’s career and life. In addition, methods for maintenance and acquisition of new skills and knowledge are reviewed. The science of learning in multiple different domains is covered, along with the significant impact simulation increasingly plays in continuous medical education. The impact the workplace organizational structure and culture exerts on promotion of professionalism in the health sciences is discussed, along with effective methods and strategies for fostering a culture of safety and professionalism.
