10 - Applicability of silver nanoparticles and innovation of magnetic nanoparticles in dentistry

Abstract
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have proved to be highly promising in applications for the development of different areas of dentistry. The use of AgNPs has been investigated in conservative dentistry, orthodontics, restorative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, implantology, and prosthodontics mainly because of their antimicrobial effects and biocompatibility. The studies have shown action against the main microorganisms related to oral problems such as Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis and P. intermedia, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, F. nucleatum, and Candida albicans. Besides, AgNPs are biocompatible with mammal cells in vivo and in vitro, with the consequent increase of cell proliferation. This suggests that their application in dental materials does not harm humans.
In the AgNPs synthesis, there prevails the reduction of silver salts by chemically reducing agents, such as NaBH4, amino groups and by green synthesis from plants’ phenolic compounds. The stabilizing agents most used for AgNPs act by steric stabilization (polyvinylpyrrolidone, Polyvinyl alcohol) and electrosteric stabilization (chitosan).
However, further studies are required to determine the best “therapeutic window” of AgNPs to guarantee the antimicrobial effect without an increase in cytotoxicity. There is also a need for in-depth in vivo studies to evaluate the release and properties of AgNPs.
