Abstract
Increased detection of small renal masses and rapid advancement of technology has led to a renaissance in the minimally invasive management of kidney cancer such that, based on excellent oncologic outcomes and limited complications, the American Urological Association now recommends percutaneous ablation as an alternative to extirpative surgery. The decision for percutaneous or laparoscopic ablation as a management option is based on tumor location/complexity and patient comorbidities. Although the two most common types of ablation are cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation, newer modalities, such as microwave ablation and irreversible electroporation, may offer some benefits over these more traditional modalities.
