Abstract
Parasitic worms (helminths) are found worldwide and billions of people carry these organisms. Helminths were once ubiquitous components of our microbiome. Their presence can influence how our immune systems respond to challenges and can alter the make-up of other members of the microbiome. Although infestation is much more common in less-industrialized developing countries, international travel, emigration, and “exotic” foods permit intestinal helminths including not only nematodes, but trematodes (tape worms), and cestodes (flat worms) as well, to appear in any locale. Gastroenterologists and hepatologists need to remain aware and informed on how to diagnose and treat these parasites. This chapter succinctly provides the necessary information for a busy clinician to care for patients with intestinal helminths.
