Abstract
What guides quality psychosocial care in nursing homes? By law, people receiving care in Medicare or Medicaid certified nursing facilities (in this manuscript referred to as nursing homes) are required to have ready access to psychosocial care. Psychosocial issues are those related to the psychological, spiritual, interpersonal, and societal aspects of living (Werth & Blevins, 2006). Residents' psychosocial needs are to be assessed and documented within 48 hours of admission and addressed throughout their nursing home stay (CMS State Operations Manual, 2017, section 483.21). Examples of resident psychosocial issues include dealing with multiple and compounding losses including loss of possessions, health and functional abilities, dignity and privacy, important relationships, role in the community; as well as crisis management; recovering from disrupted relationships; end-of-life decision-making; and advance care planning. Good psychosocial assessment also identifies and builds on residents' psychosocial strengths by supporting them in finding meaning in daily routines; connecting with people and organizations that encourage and support personal growth; and facilitating opportunities to express creativity (Bern-Klug, 2010).
