Abstract
This chapter aims to help clinicians select psychometrically sound outcome measures to assess client change in group psychotherapy. The chapter outlines reasons for routinely assessing outcomes in group psychotherapy and provides recommendations for selecting measures for clinical use with a specific focus on multicultural issues. Recommendations for identifying outcome measures for group practice include using measures that are a) brief and user-friendly; b) valid and reliable for diverse populations; and c) provide clinical cut-off scores and reliable indices of meaningful change based on normative and clinical data. The chapter identifies and provides an overview of several outcome measures based on this recommended criterion. Finally, the chapter closes with two clinical case examples to illustrate the application of routine outcome monitoring in clinical group practice and multicultural group work.
