Abstract
Though most adults place a high value on maintaining control over personal information that is revealed about them, online information, including their social media transactions, may reveal more than they intend. This article elucidates the basic concepts of privacy and geoprivacy and describes how location-revealing technologies can be used to develop locational information profiles about individuals and households. Several types of geocoding methods that can be applied to social media information are described; the reverse geocoding process, in which a map symbol is processed to yield an address, is also described. Sequences of space–time coordinates gleaned from social media transactions can be processed to reveal the activity space of an individual or household.
