Abstract
Eye banks have standardized the preparation of donor corneal tissue for Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) and Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). Eye bank tissue processing services that are available now include ultrathin DSAEK, nanothin DSAEK, and preloaded DSAEK and DMEK grafts, in addition to conventional DSAEK and DMEK graft preparations. The Cornea Preservation Time Study (CPTS) determined that the effect of preservation time on both graft success and postoperative endothelial cell loss was small and should encourage surgeons to use donor tissue with a preservation time up to 11 days. Eye bank–prepared donor tissue reduces barriers to adopting endothelial keratoplasty techniques, increases operating room efficiency, and minimizes the loss of usable tissue from iatrogenic damage.
