Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of tooth isolation for root canal therapy including potential challenges and difficulties that may be encountered requiring special considerations to properly isolate a tooth before initiation of treatment. Next, access preparation is discussed to provide guidance for removal of hindrances to gain straight-line access to the canals and to remove restorations and/or carious lesions that can cause contamination of the field during instrumentation and filling of the root canal system. Finally, techniques for proper working length determination are reviewed including designation of reference point and electronic determination of the working length.
