Abstract
Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common histologic type of thyroid carcinoma worldwide. Lymph node (LN) metastases are common, and microscopic LN metastases occur in the majority of patients who have PTC.1 LN metastases are associated with an increased risk of local or regional recurrence of cancer, and they can be a negative prognostic indicator with respect to survival.2-4 LN metastases may necessitate more extensive surgery, with increased risks, and a longer period of recovery, as well as an increased use of postoperative radioactive iodine. To facilitate development of an appropriate presurgical plan to clear all macroscopic disease during the initial surgery, a thorough examination of LNs with preoperative radiographic mapping is essential.
