Abstract
Many neurosurgical disorders affect the afferent visual system, efferent visual system, or both. Indeed, neuro-ophthalmic symptoms and signs can be the presenting feature of the disorder or the most sensitive measure for detecting progression. Thus the field of neuro-ophthalmology is of vital importance to the neurosurgeon; the neuro-ophthalmologist not only assists with initial diagnosis and management, but also helps to assess treatment response in the short term and monitor for disease progression or recurrence in the long term. In this chapter common neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of neurosurgical disorders are reviewed. In addition, an overview of other common neuro-ophthalmic conditions is included, as these frequently coexist in patients with neurosurgical disorders and can be misinterpreted as being directly related to them. The chapter includes discussion of the neuro-ophthalmic clinical history, examination, and ancillary investigations, such as formal visual field testing, as well as basic treatment approaches with emphasis on those pertinent to neurosurgical practice.
