Abstract
One of the most pressing problems of today, corruption remains sorely misunderstood. In this essay, the author refers to social scientific studies to dispel several common myths about corruption. For one, although corruption is associated with authoritarianism, democratization does not automatically reduce corruption; second, corruption simultaneously angers ordinary citizens and discourages them from affecting political change; third, absence of corruption may be a sign that the state is abusing civil rights of its citizens; and, lastly, while corruption is often seen as an immoral action by individuals, decisions to engage in corruption are, typically, made on the level of entire organizations.
