Abstract
The autologous fascial sling is a surgical option for the treatment of primary and recurrent stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Although pioneered as a surgical treatment for intrinsic sphincter deficiency, its indications have been broadened to encompass all types of SUI. Autologous fascial slings may be especially useful in patients with a fixed, immobile urethra or those who have failed a prior synthetic midurethral sling. Autologous fascia for sling surgery is commonly harvested from rectus fascia or the iliotibial fascial band of the lateral thigh (fascia lata). Authors have shown that autologous fascial slings can be effective for the treatment of SUI, with rates ranging from 31% to 100%. A common complication following autologous fascia sling surgery is voiding dysfunction. However, this may be mitigated by careful intraoperative tensioning and positioning at the midurethra.
