Abstract
Disorders of lipid metabolism are an increasingly common consequence of modern industrial lifestyles. The most common clinical manifestation of lipid disorders is atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) that results from elevated levels of apo B-100 lipoproteins. Despite tremendous advances in prevention and treatment, ASCVD remains the leading cause of death in almost every developed country in the world. Statins are the first-line lipid-modifying therapy for ASCVD risk reduction based on extensive clinical trial data that they reduce fatal and nonfatal ASCVD events and overall mortality. When the response to statins is insufficient, an increasing number of effective options are now available.
