Abstract

The brainstem contains longitudinal tracts, cranial nerve nuclei, and other discrete structures in a precise arrangement that allows very specific neurological localization based on physical examination findings. The approach to brainstem syndromes relies heavily on localization to organize an appropriate differential diagnosis. This chapter begins with a discussion of the brainstem ocular motor syndromes, followed by descriptions of miscellaneous brainstem, brainstem stroke, and thalamic syndromes.
