Abstract
Mastery of nuclear disassembly is a key skill for cataract surgeons. Residents often find nuclear disassembly difficult to master. Surgeons should have several disassembly techniques at their disposal. The divide-and-conquer technique is an important classic technique. Chopping techniques build on the divide-and-conquer technique but require more facility with the nondominant hand. The disassembly of softer or harder nuclear cataracts are approached differently. Patient issues like corneal guttata, zonular integrity, and capsule integrity affect selection of the optimal disassembly technique. Simulation using artificial eyes can help surgeons to master nuclear disassembly.
