Abstract
Oxygen is an essential fuel source for normal cellular metabolic function; hence, control of oxygen uptake, transport, and release are essential functions in humans. Aerobic metabolism is critically dependent on a constant and adequate supply of oxygen. Birth and the immediate postnatal period represent situations which challenge the oxygen transport system. In this chapter, we review the principal determinants of oxygen transport, with a particular emphasis on the modulator role of the cardiovascular system.
