Abstract
Intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) in humans affords a unique opportunity for investigation of cognition. This approach has begun to shape understanding of cognitive neuroscience for topics that are central to human existence, including memory, emotion, language, representation/execution of abstract concepts, and fundamentals of how cognition is enabled. This chapter describes the methods for iEEG and the factors that relate to the conduct of invasive research that is afforded in the surgical investigation of epilepsy patients. Examples are then presented that highlight some of the different areas of cognitive research that have been carried out over the last 20 years, guided by some of the commonly implanted brain regions in this population. This includes research regarding the prefrontal cortex, medial temporal lobe, anterior temporal lobe (ATL), and superior temporal cortex. Human invasive research in epilepsy patients continues to test and shape theories of human cognition in both normal and disordered conditions, and new breakthroughs are on the horizon as the volume of research using this technique continues to expand.
