Abstract
This chapter highlights three acceleration interventions, above-level testing, content acceleration in math, and Advanced Placement (AP). Relative to everyday practice with gifted students, the National Association for Gifted Children promotes academic acceleration as a research-based intervention. Above-level testing is offered on a large-scale basis through university-based talent search programs grounded in Stanley's Talent Search model. The University of Minnesota's Talented Youth Mathematics Program uses a combination of testing, teacher/counselor recommendations, and interviews to serve mathematically talented students throughout Minnesota. The Iowa Online Advanced Placement Academy uses teacher recommendations, past course performance, and student interest/motivation to assess readiness for AP. Funded by a state legislative initiative in partnership with the University of Iowa's Belin-Blank Center, the Iowa Online Advanced Placement Academy was formed to offer greater accessibility to the AP program for high schools with limited access to AP.
