Abstract
This chapter aims to uplift trans and nonbinary (TNB) families, specifically through exploring the experiences of TNB parents and caregivers. It examines cisheteronormative assumptions and definitions of parenting and how mental health providers (MHPs) can challenge these inaccurate perceptions, social norms, and gender roles. It also reviews the unique stressors TNB parents and families experience, as well as the resilience-as-resistance strategies and mutual aid resources they create to protect and support their families. The chapter highlights reciprocal and relational influence that parents or caregivers and their children have on each other. Finally, it shares recommendations MHPs can use to ensure TNB parents and caregivers have affirming and liberatory experiences with their MHPs. The chapter highlights how MHPs can address interlocking oppressions, such as racism, sexism, classism, and other intersectional oppressions.
