Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to summarize the research literature on the factors that predict risk and the alternatives organizations can use over traditional criminal background checks to reduce the types of risk criminal history is supposed to predict (e.g., theft, workplace violence, etc.). This includes (1) a brief review of criminal background checks in hiring, including the mitigating factors that reduce risk such as factors regarding the crime and criminal behavior, job relatedness of the crime, incarceration history, and number of past crimes; (2) factors regarding the person’s background such as employment history, education history, age at the time of the crime, years since the crime was committed, and rehabilitation efforts; (3) other selection procedures that predict risk such as personality tests, integrity tests, structured interviews, reference checks, and drug testing; and (4) alternatives to selection procedures to reduce risk such as physical security measures, surveillance, computer systems that monitor for unusual activity, clear and well-communicated company policies and procedures, internal control work procedures, employee incentive systems, workplace violence prevention programs, ensuring organizational justice, reducing workplace stress, and reducing workplace incivility and harassment.
