Abstract
Rectovaginal fistulas are a challenging condition, causing physical and psychosocial suffering for the patient and management dilemmas for the surgeon. The term “rectovaginal” is a generic term including anovaginal, anoperineal, and pouch-vaginal fistulas. Obstetric trauma and Crohn’s disease account for the majority of fistulas. A thorough evaluation to understand the fistula anatomy and health of surrounding tissue, and adequate drainage to control sepsis are mandatory prior to surgical intervention. The repair must be tailored to the patient, and it is imperative that the surgeon have a variety of approaches in the armamentarium.
