Abstract
Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an acquired thrombotic syndrome characterized by arterial/venous thrombosis and pregnancy complications and by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. The pathogenesis is complex and mediated not only by the antibodies but also by thrombotic initiation events. It occurs either as a primary disease or in the context of other autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The most widely accepted classification criteria is the revised Sapporo criteria (also known as Sydney criteria).
