Abstract
Autologous fascia pubovaginal sling has been a mainstay of surgical treatment for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) since its development in the 1970s and refinement in the 1990s. In addition to treatment of SUI, fascial slings also have a role in urethral reconstruction and closure of the bladder outlet in neurogenic patients. Proper tensioning of the fascial sling is an important step, ideally enhanced with experience and suitable training. A majority of sling complications relate to iatrogenic obstruction, ranging from de novo overactive bladder symptoms to frank retention. Surgeons should be knowledgeable in the proper management of postoperative obstruction.
