Abstract
Periodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases and peri-implant diseases. In addition, periodontists, the dental specialty practitioners of periodontics, perform other surgical procedures, examples of which include, placement of dental implants, and soft tissue surgical procedures, that enhance dental esthetics and function. This chapter covers the biomaterial use in periodontic surgeries and the extent and differences in immune response to the clinically used biomaterials. The immune cells active insuch responses were explained with specific examples. The chapter concludes by the description of immune responses to dental implants, luting agents and crown materials.

Dental implants have become a large part of the practice of dentistry and dental implant placement, maintenance and treatment of peri-implant diseases has become a large part of the practice of periodontics. Most dental implants used with significant success are made of titanium and its alloys. This mirrors the widespread use of titanium in the field of orthopedics. Periodontal or implant procedures for oral rehabilitation may involve the use of metal-based alloys such as dental crowns, casts, metal frameworks, temporisation materials and metal-ceramic restorations. The chapter concludes by the description of immune responses to dental implants, luting agents and crown materials.
