Abstract
From their inception, academic journals focused on documenting existing phenomena within a specific field have favored the discoveries of Western-based authors. This trend continues today, including in the field of communication, where there are significant differences in the proportion, placement and impact of journal publishing between scholars in the Global North and those in the Global South. This chapter draws attention to inequities in scholarly knowledge production and discusses some of the main structural and cultural barriers that disadvantage scholars based in the Global South. These barriers, including resource limitations and double standards faced during the review process, can make it difficult for Global South scholars to place their work in many peer-reviewed journals. Despite these challenges, there are new and ongoing initiatives that can help broaden the conversation and create a more inclusive scholarly community, such as invited forums that deliberately seek out the perspective of scholars in the Global South; special issues and regional collections that draw attention to important scholarship about underrepresented countries and regions; programs that create opportunities for mutually beneficial knowledge exchange; and efforts to make published scholarship available in languages other than English. While certainly not exhaustive, the specific programs and ideas discussed in this chapter can serve as building blocks to diversifying academic publishing.
