Abstract

Hemobilia and bilhemia are rare disorders that arise from injury and damage to hepatic vasculature and biliary tree. They are typically secondary to iatrogenic trauma sustained during hepatobiliary instrumentation, although they can occur secondary to accidental trauma, neoplasms, inflammatory processes, or vascular disorders. These injuries can have significant morbidity and mortality if not identified and rectified in a timely manner. Angiography, endoscopy, and contrast-enhanced axial imaging remain the diagnostic modalities of choice. Although historically managed surgically, advances in endovascular and endoscopic interventions have made these the primary treatment modalities for hemobilia and bilhemia.
