Abstract
Portal hypertension and its complications (see Chapters 74, 79, and 80) can cause significant morbidity in children. It is one of the leading indications for consideration of liver transplantation. Etiology that most commonly accounts for the development of portal hypertension is different in children compared with adults. Biliary atresia and extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) are two common causes of portal hypertension in children. The management of pediatric portal hypertension is challenging, as there are limited prospective and clinical trials available and most of the data are extrapolated from studies in adults.
