Abstract
Magnus Hirschfeld is best remembered today for his work as a sexual scientist and for his advocacy of the rights of homosexuals. But he also played a significant role in the history of sexual consumption. Hirschfeld and the Institute for Sexual Science helped to shape a consumer environment that bridged the nascent but heavily suppressed market of the late nineteenth century and the permissive marketplace of the late twentieth century.
