Abstract

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by hyperandrogenism and ovarian dysfunction, with multiple coexistent criteria suggested for defining the syndrome. Diagnosis of PCOS should only be made after excluding other diagnoses, especially in adolescents in whom pubertal and perimenarchal physiology may overlap with some findings of PCOS. Therapy for PCOS in adolescents should be tailored to amelioration of symptoms, preservation of fertility, prevention of uterine cancer, and, if present, reduction in insulin resistance to prevent associated comorbidities.
