Abstract
Challenging behavior is commonly observed in the ID population, and it is associated with a number of poor outcomes. Considerably less is known about challenging behavior in the dual diagnosis population; however, much can be deduced from research on the interrelationships between challenging behavior, ID, and psychopathology. This chapter presents an overview of challenging behavior in dual diagnosis, including a review of common challenging behaviors, putative risk factors, and theories on the cause(s) of such behavior. Although much of what is presented is based upon a considerably larger research base related to challenging behavior in the ID population, attempts to integrate research on various aspects of psychopathology in the ID population are made.
