Abstract
Bacteria play a pivotal role in the development of periodontal diseases. Literally, hundreds of different species can be found in the oral cavity, although just a few of them are linked with disease. These bacteria have developed ingenious ways to maintain themselves within the oral cavity and to interact with each other and their host. The complexity of these interactions is reflected in different etiologic models that have been proposed over the years. Knowledge of these bacteria is important for understanding the etiology and treatment of periodontal diseases. This chapter opens the microbiologic world to the reader.
