Abstract
The human beings throughout their lives are often infected by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and viruses. Contaminations by microorganisms are responsible for the main oral problems. In endodontics, elimination or significant reduction of these microorganisms is directly related to the treatment success. Despite all the technological advances, the improvement of cleaning and shaping techniques which has been developed in recent decades, there is no significant increase in the success rates. The failures are mostly related to persistence and/or resistance of microbial infections to the complexity of root anatomy, technical quality of the professional and operative errors . Thus, this chapter aims, through a literature review, to analyze the possibilities of application of AgNPs in different phases of endodontic treatment, as a possible adjunct in the treatment of endodontic infections, assuming that AgNPs have among others properties, antimicrobial activity, and can reach areas untouched by the chemical-mechanical preparation of the root canal system.
